1. Saint Bernard
The St. Bernard Dog is a working dog from the Swiss Alps that was bred for rescue missions in mountain passes. It is a truly huge dog, standing in from 27 to 35 inches at the withers (the highest point on the back of an upright animal). Males can weigh anywhere between 73 to 117 kg. The St. Bernard is a very loyal and friendly breed. Although not an overly aggressive dog, socialization and proper training is required at an early age so that it does not become unmanageable.
2. Mastiff
The Mastiff (also known as the English Mastiff) is the second largest of all dog breeds. Males can weigh between 68–110 kg and their standard height is 30 inches. Although Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds are taller then the Mastiff they are much smaller in terms of mass. Mastiffs are a muscular and powerful breed and they are renowned for their courage and dignity. Mastiffs are considered as one of the best guard dogs in the world and make for a loving and well mannered house pet.
3. Neapolitan Mastiff
The Neapolitan Mastiff is considered as the 3rd largest dog breed in the world. Standing in at 26 to 31 inches this breed has a standard weight of 74 KG although larger specimens are common. Renowned for their fearsome appearance and protective instincts, this breed makes for a great guard dog. They need to be properly socialized at an early stage so they don’t become a danger for strangers.
4. Newfoundland
Weighing in at 60 to 70 kg (males) the Newfoundland dog is the fourth largest breed in the world. It is considered by some as the strongest of all dogs and excels at water rescue operations. Newfoundland dogs are an extremely loving, patient and gentle dog that make for a great house pet. Its webbed feet and tremendous strength make it an outstanding swimmer.
5. Dogue de Bordeaux
The Dogue de Bordeaux (also known as the French Mastiff) is one of the most ancient of all French dog breeds. French Mastiffs are powerful and imposing dogs. They have a fearless spirit and are ideal for guard duties. Dogue de Bordeaux rank as the fifth largest dog in the world weighing in from 54 to 65 kg for males with a height of 23-30 inches.
6. Great Dane
The Great Dane is renowned for its size and sometimes referred to as ‘Apollo of all breeds’. It is considered as the second tallest dog after Irish Wolfhounds. Great Danes rank as number 6 in terms of size. Males Danes can weigh anywhere between 54 to 90 kg and reach a height of 30-34 inches. This is a beautiful and usually well manned breed that is patient with children.
7. Irish Wolfhound
The Irish Wolfhound is an ancient breed that has been used over the centuries primarily for wolf hunting. The tallest of dog breeds they usually weigh 40 to 69 kg and have a height of 28-35 inches. Irish Wolfhounds are an intelligent, patient and generous breed. Their sweet natures allow them to be trusted with children. These dogs are somewhat clumsy and aren’t recommended for guard duties.
8. Perro de Presa Canario
The Perro de Presa Canario (or simply ‘Presa Canario’) is a large and powerful dog that originated in the Canary Islands and was specifically developed for dog fighting and large game hunting. This breed weighs in around 36 to 59 kg and stands at 21 to 25 inches. Presa Canarios are outstanding guard dogs but they are NOT for the novice or first time dog owner due to their dominant natures. This breed requires extensive socialization and obedience training.
9. Pyrenean Mountain Dog
The Pyrenean Mountain Dog is also known as Great Pyrenees and is commonly used as a livestock guardian. It is a serious and well mannered dog that is wary of strangers. Weighing in at around 50 to 54 kg the Great Pyrenees ranks at 9th in terms of size. Like most large dogs, early socialization is necessary for these dogs.
10. Kuvasz
The kuvasz (pronounced: KOO-vahz) is a large and ancient dog breed of Hungarian origin. They have traditionally been used as livestock guardian. This dog weighs at around 45 to 52 kg and stands at 28 to 30 inches. The kuvasz is an independent thinker and can be hard to train.

can they not count or am i missing something? the great dane is said to be 30-34 inches tall and weight between 54-90 kilograms but its below the french mastiff which is 23-30 inches tall weighing between 54-65 kilograms??

How about doing the research first. I personally have had 3 Great Danes (2 males and 1 female) that all were comfortably taller than 36" at their shoulders. 1 male weighed 175 and the other wieghed 185, the girl wieghed 180 but she had a slight weight problem. I have also had an English Mastiff who wieghed between 225 and 250 from the time he was 2 years old till he passed away at 10. And the world's heaviest dog is a Mastiff. And the last 3 tallest dog record holders were all Great Danes. Terrible!!!

mastiffs are always a win.
mastiffs are always a win. diet and excercise is most impportant in any case. rottis and pitbulls are smaller but can be bulked up beautifully.

Even an alaskan malamute is bigger then the kuvasz(My neighbors has 3 malamutes in the size of 55-60 kg, and an famous dog ( forgot name but it costed about 300.000 dollars ) was bought here in china. It was a Tibetan mastiff weighting 120 kg, and was just 2 years old.

Just think, Ya, ya can't if your Hindu, but im saying for people who openly can. There is nothing in the Torah or bible or any of that stuff that say's you cant eat dogs. (in my religion, christianity) god created animals FOR food, and the plant idea was already explained. We'd all be frail and die.
I had St Bernard's when I
I had St Bernard's when I was a kid...a little later on I had a komondor. The komondor is a Hungarian sheep dog (also known as a wolf-killer in Hungary). My komondor was larger than the Saint Bernards. All were males btw.

Some how the Caucasian
Some how the Caucasian shepard seems to have been missed. These dogs become giants, some of them reaching into the 200 pound category. I think this dog should be included. If anyone disagrees, just google caucasian ovcharka, and do an image search.

Those are the facts with no bullshit. The largest verfified dog was a 343 pound mastiff who was over 8 feet long and 37 inchs at the withers. Thats verified by a governing body KC as well as guiness, Theres loads of rubbish sprouted about legendery dogs but once you ask for the evidance those stories fall to bits. The largest dogs are OEM with breaders in America now trying to get even more height into them which I think lessens the breed., Now please someone type some bullshit after this comment saying that another breed is bigger ... lol ... morons.

My folks raised Old English Mastiff dogs for their entire adult lives. My family imported several large dogs from South .America, Italy, France and Switzerland. Over the years. Dad owned the largest registered dog in the world in the early forties. Midget weighed in at about 260 lbs at his peak in. weight...... and stood 36.5"inches at the shoulders. He was tempermental, very hard to handle and held a crudge for a long time. I have seen heaver dogs that looked more like overly fat hogs than dogs. we had friends with a pair of over weight mastiffs that were nearly 280 lbs each. Both were over 270 lbs each at various times in their lives..
We had a St. Bernard , named Juno, that reached 35" tall and 245 lbs, he would rescue you if he thought you went swimming to farout in the water, nearly drowning you in the process. All the screaming and yelling didn't save you from being saved. He went fishing with us in our boats and he would worry and fret. every time we went swimming. My brothers and I really Loved those big wonderful dogs and have very fond memories of most all of them.

English Mastiff's are the world's largest dogs and have been for centuries. Somebody got too excited because for the first time in history somebody overfed their St. Bernard and it out wieghed Zorba, the old Largest Dog record holder. I've owned St. Bernard's, and I've owned English Msstiffs. I have a 2 year old English Mastiff who weighs 240 lbs and stands 35 inches at the shoulder. Average St. Bernard dog weight is 140-180 lbs. Mastiffs are 170-260. Big difference.

Mine is 105 kgs (fully fit and healthy, not over weight) and is at least 39 inches tall. All the others I see (in Australia) are similar size to him.
